Camping Program

Our camping program gives scouts a broad introduction to different outdoor adventures while providing opportunities to learn scouting skills and earn awards. We typically camp once a month and even our winter campouts typically offer outdoor camping opportunites for those who want to earn camping nights.

Each year at Tomahawk summer camp, the scouts are presented with a list of camping ideas and the scouts indicate their interest in the different ideas. Then the youth-run Patrol Leader Council reviews the results and decides which events should be on the calendar for the next year or two. Our Camping Coordinator then makes reservations and adult leaders volunteer to lead each campout.

A typical year may look something like this:

Sept - Fishing
Oct - Biking
Oct - MEA Backpacking
Nov - Varies - Wilderness Survival, Pioneering, etc.
Dec - Cooking
Jan - Snowsports (ski/snowboard/snowshoe/XC ski, etc.)
Feb - Snowbase (winter camping)
Mar - Varies - Ripley Rendevous, Eagle Cave, WWII Submarine overnight, etc.
Apr - Hiking
May - Canoeing or Whitewater
Jun - "Mid-Adventure" to prepare scouts for High Adventure; BWCA, Backpacking, Rock Climbing at Devil's Lake, etc.
